We learn quite a few things before being born. The fetus learns the sound of its mother’s voice and, once born, prefers that voice over any other. Give a newborn two dummies and then make it listen to its mother’s voice through headphones while sucking the first dummy and to a female stranger’s voice while sucking the second and soon the newborn will show a preference for the former dummy. Newborns cry in the accent of their native tongue, French newborns with a rising tone and German babies with a falling tone, so imitating the melody of the two languages. This technique helps survival because it helps the child communicate with the person who is most likely to take care of it. The same happens with tastes and flavors. Mothers who eat a lot of carrots or even anise have children who prefer these flavors. The fetus learns from its mother what will be safe to eat.
