RECOGNIZING A FACE

RECOGNIZING A FACE

Every day we discover new ways our genes help us develop social bonds. We knew that the shape of our face was influenced by our genes. We all have facial features our parents have and it may be impossible to distinguish between identical twins. What has recently been discovered is that some parts of the face are more greatly controlled by genes than other parts. A study involving over 1000 subjects has shown that the shape of the tip of one’s nose, the areas above and below the lips, the cheek bones and the internal part of the eye are more strongly controlled by genes.  These also happen to be key areas for facial recognition which is an innate faculty, in turn influenced by gene make up, unrelated to intelligence, indispensable for a newborn to recognize its mother and for the development of social relations in general.
