Spending too much time alone is not considered to be a good thing for one’s health and it may have lasting negative psychological effects. By isolating oneself, one does not acquire techniques that help one to get along in the world of today. Studies say that there are various types of social isolation and not all are bad for your health. Some people isolate themselves out of fear or because of anxiety. In this case the main problem is shyness. Others simply do not enjoy interacting with people even when they do not have much else to do. However, there are also people who love solitude and prefer reading, thinking or working at their computer. They do not take the initiative in social contacts nor do they refuse contacts if they happen. They are not very sociable nor are they antisocial or surly. Differently from other types of solitude this type is associated with creativity and innovative ideas. It is important not to confuse the various types of solitude. In particular, teachers and parents must recognize when their children’s solitude is associated with a problem or may be a valuable resource.
