Various studies tell us that young people should sleep 8-10 hours a night to fully exploit their mental and physical potential. Sleeping less hours is associated with learning, emotional, growth and relational disorders. A new study lasting eight years and involving 68000 youngsters has shown a close relationship between number of hours slept and high-risk behavior. Youngsters who sleep less than six hours a night have twice the rate of alcohol and drug related problems as well as accidents and fights respect to those who sleep at least eight hours. How much, where, when and with whom to sleep is all part of what children should be taught beginning in very young age. In fact, how to sleep (similarly to how to eat, drink or speak) can be taught and this should begin on day 1 of life. The longer parents wait the bigger the future problems may be. Some parents begin lessons when their child is 10-15 years old and this is 10-15 years too late
